The Thurgood Marshall Eagles Girls Tennis Team has soared to new heights, closing out their 2025 Mission Valley League (MVL) season with a flawless 10-0 record, marking their second consecutive undefeated campaign. Their dominance continued through the League Prelims and Finals, culminating in a commanding performance across both singles and doubles brackets.

      By Rena Kurlander

In a thrilling repeat of last year’s singles final, Marshall’s top two players faced off once again. This time, junior Diana Kasabian, the team’s No. 2 singles player, emerged victorious over senior Hannah Hagiwara in a hard-fought battle, winning 2–6, 6–4, 10–8. The match not only showcased the team’s depth of talent but also ensured an Eagles victory regardless of the outcome.

Bailee Maxwell, Marshall’s No. 3 singles player, reached the semifinals before falling to teammate Kasabian. She went on to secure the third-place consolation prize, rounding out a strong singles showing for the team.

In doubles action, the #1 team of Elena Edmonds and Keri Altamirano dominated the competition, cruising through the finals with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory over Arroyo. Their teammates, Sophia Alpuche and Lexie Palacios, the #2 doubles team, were bested in the semifinals by Elena and Keri, ultimately finishing fourth.

Looking ahead, Diana Kasabian, Hannah Hagiwara, and the doubles duo of Elena and Keri will represent the MVL in the CIF Individual Competition in late November, following the CIF Team Competition which begins Wednesday, November 5. The CIF bracket will be available on the CIFSS website starting Saturday morning.

In the 2024 historic season, the Eagles were crowned CIF Southern Section Division 5 Champions. They will be honored with championship rings during the Thurgood Marshall Centennial Celebration, 100 Years of Athletics, on November 8:00 at 11:00 am in the Sports Complex Gymnasium, 990 North Allen Avenue, Pasadena. All are welcome to attend this momentous occasion.
