A man accused of attempting to break into a South Pasadena home late Monday night was taken into custody after a brief confrontation with police, authorities said.

Officers with the South Pasadena Police Department were dispatched at 11:04 pm on March 30, 2026, to the area of Milan Avenue and Oak Street following a report of an attempted residential burglary. A resident told police that a man tried to kick down her front door before fleeing on foot.
Responding officers arrived within minutes and located a suspect matching the description nearby. When officers made contact, the man allegedly refused to comply with verbal commands and took a fighting stance, prompting officers to deploy a Taser.
The suspect was subdued and taken into custody without further incident. No officers were injured during the encounter.
Police identified the individual as Kevin Dale Martin, 52. Authorities later determined that Martin had escaped from a California state hospital, where he was being held as a ward of the state.
Martin was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation, then cleared and returned to the custody of the state hospital system.
