School staff volunteered to host PTA-sponsored tables featuring free food and crafts representing their own heritage or the places their families emigrated from. Cultures from Veracruz, Zacatecas, Guanajuato and other regions of Mexico were highlighted alongside displays representing Ukraine, Zambia, Armenia, France, El Salvador, Jamaica, the Philippines and Italy. Staff members shared traditional foods, crafts and colorful cultural attire with attendees throughout the evening.
Entertainment included a performance by the Altadena Aztec Dancers, who entered to the rhythm of drums and presented the Blessing of the Four Elements. The Los Hermanos Bañuelos Charro Team also performed with their dancing horses on the school field. Additional attractions included pony rides, a petting zoo and tacos available for purchase.
Students who arrived early received special gifts, with the first 100 students receiving goody bags that included an In-N-Out gift card and other items. Every student was also given a blue passport book upon entry. As students visited the heritage tables, they collected stamps in their passports, and those who earned 10 stamps could redeem a prize at the Passport Completion Table.
Madison Principal Dr. Elisa Perez praised the success of the inaugural event and thanked the community for its participation.
“Thank you to all who helped us celebrate the many cultures that make our Madison community so special!” Perez said.
