Eliot Arts Magnet Academy will host regional “Women’s History Month” assembly on March 7, 2020, from I:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

      By Jennifer Hall Lee

Laura Farber, President of the 2019-2020 Tournament of Roses Association, will be the keynote speaker for the third annual Women’s History assembly.

      Laura Farber said:

I am looking forward to sharing the importance of women’s history to our community, to our country, and to our world and how the Tournament of Roses has been able to incorporate some of that history in our Rose Parade and other Tournament of Roses events.

Lori Touloumian, Eliot Arts Magnet Academy Principal, said, “The Women’s History Month middle school collaborative has grown since its inception in 2018. It is now an ACSA Region 15 sponsored event, which includes all PUSD middle schools and invites neighboring districts to participate. We welcome Ms. Farber to our event!”

The year 2020, is the centennial celebration of women‘s right to vote. “We created this assembly in 2018 to remember the fight for women’s suffrage and the achievements of the Women’s Liberation Movement. It’s often shocking to students when they discover that prior to the Women’s Liberation Movement women couldn’t obtain credit cards or a home mortgage by themselves.  Women could legally be rejected by college admissions just because they were female. The Women’s Liberation Movement changed all that and more,” said Jennifer Hall Lee, chair of the Eliot Arts Annual Fund.

      What to expect

Blair High School JROTC will present colors at the start of the event and each student essayist and artist will present their work on stage in the historic auditorium at Eliot Arts Magnet Academy.

Local politicians, or their field representatives, will be in attendance to give official certificates from the offices of: Congresswoman Judy Chu, State Senator Anthony Portantino, Assemblyman Chris Holden, Mayor Terry Tornek, and Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

Eliot costumes will line the lobby and there will be a unique art installation created by students commemorating 100 years of women’s Suffrage. Appetizers will be provided by Stater Bros. in Pasadena.

Altadena Public Library, Census 2020, Day One, Safe Streets Mobility & Traffic Safety, CHA CHA Altadenans for Clean Healthy Air, and many more local organizations, will staff tables and offer their information.

The event is free and open to the public.
