The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the implementation of an emergency rent relief program, with key amendments by Board Chair Kathryn Barger.

Barger, who has been a vocal advocate for those affected by the recent Eaton Fire, introduced amendments that significantly enhance the program’s support for survivors. These changes include raising the rent relief cap from $5,000 to $15,000, enabling renters to receive assistance for up to six months of rent. Additionally, the program will see an infusion of $10 million, providing much-needed financial relief to those struggling to recover.
In a statement following the approval, Chair Barger expressed gratitude for the unanimous support from her fellow supervisors. “I’m grateful my fellow Supervisors supported my amendments to expand rent relief for Eaton Fire survivors. By raising the rent relief caps from $5,000 to $15,000 to cover up to six months of rent and adding $10 million to the overall program, we’re giving families real breathing room,” she said. “Equally important, these amendments direct our County to gather critical data so we can make smarter, more informed decisions about housing stability. My goal is straightforward: to keep people in their homes and give them stability as they rebuild their lives.”
The motion, introduced by Supervisors Lindsey P. Horvath and Hilda L. Solis in collaboration with Supervisor Barger, reflects the Board’s commitment to ensuring housing security in the aftermath of the devastating fire that impacted countless families in the region.
As part of the expanded program, the County will begin collecting crucial data to better understand housing needs and strengthen future policies aimed at maintaining housing stability for vulnerable communities.
