In the wake of devastating wildfires, L.A. County Board of Supervisors adopts comprehensive recovery plan.

      By Rena Kurlander

On Tuesday, January 28, the Board adopted an extensive recovery plan to guide the county’s efforts to respond and rebuild. Introduced by Board Chair Kathryn Barger and Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, the plan aims to provide immediate relief while also ensuring long-term resilience against future disasters.

“The devastation caused by the January 2025 wildfires has been catastrophic, but I am unwavering in my commitment to rebuild quickly and robustly,” said Board Chair Kathryn Barger. “This motion is not simply about immediate recovery. It’s about creating a more resilient and equitable future for all of our communities.”

Supervisor Horvath echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of aligning expertise across county departments to support a swift and sustainable recovery. “[We] will do everything we can to care for fire-impacted communities through every phase of the recovery and rebuilding journey. No one is alone, and every resource is on the table,” Horvath said.

The recovery plan centers around several key principles designed to address both immediate and long-term needs:

      1. Swift and Equitable Recovery:
The plan ensures that crucial support reaches those who need it most, prioritizing vulnerable populations and reducing financial obstacles. Key strategies include financial assistance and waivers to offset building code modifications, which will help rebuild homes and businesses without undue financial strain.
      2. Streamlined Processes:
To speed up recovery efforts, the county has committed to reducing bureaucratic hurdles and expediting necessary permitting and approvals. This will remove delays and ensure that recovery efforts move forward without unnecessary roadblocks.
      3. Robust Funding Acquisition:
The County will pursue all available funding, from federal, state, and local sources, as well as private entities, to maximize the resources needed for recovery. This proactive approach aims to secure the financial backing required to restore the county’s impacted communities.
      4. Targeted Community Support:
A cornerstone of the plan is providing clear, accessible information and resources to residents and businesses. Through extensive outreach efforts, the county will guide individuals through the complex recovery process, ensuring that no one is left behind.
      5. Enhanced Disaster Preparedness:
Looking beyond the immediate recovery, the plan incorporates long-term measures for disaster preparedness, ensuring that the county is better equipped to handle future emergencies and reduce the impact of future wildfires.

The County’s Auditor-Controller will monitor progress and provide regular updates to ensure that all efforts are carried out efficiently and with full accountability.
