The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a motion to proclaim April 11 as National Pet Day and Dog Therapy Appreciation Day, recognizing the important role pets play in the lives of residents across the county.

The motion, introduced by Chair and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis and co-authored by Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger, highlights the deep connection between families and their animals, as well as the many ways pets serve the community. Beyond companionship, animals contribute to public service through roles in law enforcement, the military, search-and-rescue operations, and as guide and therapy animals.
County officials noted that many animals enter shelters due to housing instability, financial hardship, and challenges with reunification. The past year has brought additional strain, as the January 2025 wildfires and ongoing immigration enforcement have created uncertainty for families and, in some cases, led to pets being separated from their owners. A recent 300-animal welfare operation in the Antelope Valley in March 2026 has further stretched the county’s animal care system and underscored the need for increased public awareness and community support.
“As Angelenos navigate these challenges, we continue to see the impact on animals in our care system, with more pets being displaced,” said Chair Solis. “This proclamation is a call to action to raise awareness about the benefits of pet ownership, highlight available resources, and encourage pet adoption.”
Residents are encouraged to visit the County’s Department of Animal Care and Control website to learn more about adoptable pets and services available at its seven animal care centers.
In addition to the pet-related observances, the Board also approved several other proclamations for April. These include Child Abuse Prevention Month, County Volunteer Month, DMV/Donate Life Month, Fair Housing Month, and Mental Health Awareness Month. The Board also designated April 17, 2026, as Home Visiting Day and April 6 through 10, 2026, as National Community Development Week.
“From supporting pet adoption and animal welfare to advancing child safety, mental health, housing equity, and community development, April is a time to recognize the people and programs that help our communities thrive,” Solis added. “These proclamations celebrate the ways residents and County programs work together to improve lives across the region.”
