From eighty applicants interviewed by Kiwanis members, Dr. Chasity Jennings-Nunez, Catherine Cordero and Maryann Baldonado, Mary Cammarano, Joel Cordero and Velma De La Rosa, the following students were selected to receive the scholarships:
- Del Mar High School: Rodigo Jacobo and Alejandro Perez.
- San Gabriel Academy: Fernado Herrera Guijosa.
- Gabrielino High School: Jorge De La Cruz, Devanie Holguin, Ashley Sanchez and Josefina Sanchez.
- San Gabriel High School (AUSD): Jiarui (Lisa) Liu and Johanna Sycip.
- San Gabriel Mission: Ariana Lopez and Jessie Mendoza.
In addition to being outstanding in academics, the scholarship winners were very active in school organizations and activities. All will be attending college.
Johanna Sycip, from San Gabriel High School, said, “I feel grateful and humbled to receive this award. I look forward to what the future holds.” Sycip will be attending East Los Angeles College to study nursing.
Jorge De La Cruz, from Gabrielino High School, will be attending UC Santa Barbara to study Zoology and Geology with an emphasis on Paleontology (study of fossils and in particular dinosaurs). “This scholarship is really important to me. My brother and mother kept telling me to find scholarships, find scholarships, so I was so happy to get it. I have been needing a new laptop. Mine just doesn’t work anymore. This will give me the chance to get something I really need and to do well.”
Another Gabrielino graduate, Ashley Sanchez, will be attending Cal Poly Pomona to study business administration, marketing and journalism. She has been the production chief for the school newspaper. “I would love to pursue a career in digital marketing or journalism…to become an entrepreneur and start a non-profit to give back to the community.”
Key Club Advisor, Joseph Claro had words of inspiration for the new graduates:
This has been a difficult week (with the mass shooting in Texas of young students), but you kids are giving us hope for the future. Hope for a better tomorrow. Hope that you can make a difference.
You are the keys. We are counting on you to fulfill our dreams.
