Keck Hospital of USC and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital (USC-VHH) have both received an “A” for safety in the Fall 2025 Hospital Safety Grade, awarded by The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving patient safety.

This marks the first time that Keck Medicine of USC, the health system encompassing both hospitals, has earned two “A” grades simultaneously, a significant achievement for the esteemed medical organization.
The “A” grade for Keck Hospital is its 11th since 2019. USC-VHH, for its part, has earned its second “A” grade in recent years. The Leapfrog Group’s grading system evaluates hospitals based on a range of factors affecting patient safety, including infection rates, surgical outcomes, and adherence to best practices that prevent avoidable harm. The grades are peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and updated biannually, once in the fall and again in the spring.
In addition to this Leapfrog recognition, Keck Hospital was recently named a 2025 Top Performer by Vizient, Inc., ranking it among the top 12 hospitals in the United States for high-quality care.
Rod Hanners, CEO of Keck Medicine, celebrated the milestone, highlighting the significance of the award: “The Leapfrog Group grades hospitals against a set of very rigorous standards, and this grade places our hospitals among the safest in the country.” Marty Sargeant, CEO of Keck Medical Center, commended the dedication of the hospital’s staff: “Keck Hospital’s ‘A’ grade from Leapfrog is a testament to the hard work and excellence our faculty and staff demonstrate every day.”
Keck Hospital, a 343-bed acute care facility, provides specialized care across a broad range of medical disciplines. USC-VHH, a 140-bed community hospital located in Glendale, serves patients in surrounding Southern California communities, including La Cañada Flintridge and the Foothill areas.
