Spacecraft Thermal Engineer Louis Tse is among the names on ABC News’ 2021 Inspiration List.

      By Reina Esparza

ABC News honored Louis Tse, an engineer at JPL, for his work in helping homeless students at his alma mater, UCLA. While obtaining his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Tse took note of all the students who stayed inside campus buildings for sleep and shelter with nowhere else to go.

This prompted Tse to co-found Bruin Shelter, now known as Students 4 Students, which set up student-run shelters that assisted struggling students so they could achieve their educational goals without having to worry about hunger and homelessness.

In order to fully immerse himself and fund this initiative, Tse took it one step further. He became houseless himself, moving into his car for two years. Since then, Students 4 Students, also has spread to other campuses.

Although Tse has moved on to JPL and studying our solar system, he continues to be involved with Students 4 Students as it continues to improve the lives of students experiencing homelessness.

Reina Esparza is the former editor for the Courier at Pasadena City College and a recent graduate of Cal State Long Beach in Journalism.
