The community is invited to unite in commemorating the one-year anniversary of the devastating Eaton Canyon Fire with a special group singing event.
By Melanie Hooks
This gathering invites all voices, regardless of experience, to join in song as a way to honor the lives affected by the fire and express collective grief, strength, and hope.
The event promises to be an emotional and uplifting experience, where music will serve as a powerful tool for healing. “Singing is a spiritual practice, a community practice,” says Arnaé Baton, one of the event’s song leaders. “It reawakens joy, builds connections, and provides a musical salve for the wounds that we all share.” Baton, a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and song leader, has dedicated her career to using music to advocate for racial and environmental justice. Her passion is evident in her role as artistic director for both the Hearts Afire Community Choir and the Voices Raised LA Vocal Collective, two grassroots a cappella groups that emphasize unity through song. Baton’s organization, the SSING Network, supports her vision of “Sharing Songs and Inspiring Neighborhood Gatherings” throughout the world.
Baton will be joined by Anilee List, a vocal storyteller and collaborator whose music has taken her to stages around the world. Known for her work with artist Olivia Rodrigo, List’s latest project, “Song Seeds,” focuses on group singing as a means of healing. List believes that singing as a community fosters deep connection and emotional growth, helping individuals reclaim their authentic selves through song.
The event aims to provide a sense of solidarity, offering a platform for the community to support one another through music in the wake of the tragedy. All are welcome to come together, lift their voices, and share in the collective strength that music offers. This event serves as a reminder that even in the face of loss, there is hope and healing through the shared act of song.
