John Muir High School will mark its 100th anniversary with a community celebration Nov. 1 at the historic Rufus Mead Auditorium in Pasadena.

The event, scheduled to begin at 10:00 am, will bring together alumni, students, families and community leaders to celebrate the school’s history and contributions to Pasadena, Altadena and beyond.
The celebration will include ceremonies honoring distinguished alumni, performances by current students, a homecoming picnic in the “M” Quad and tours of the renovated Alumni Museum. Food vendors and student and alumni group sales also will be available during the picnic.
Pasadena Federal Credit Union has donated $10,000 to serve as the event’s first presenting sponsor. CEO James Chang said the credit union was honored to support the celebration and recognize the contributions of generations of Muir students and educators.
The event also will launch the Muir Centennial Legacy Fund, which has a goal of raising $100,000. Organizers say the fund will support scholarships, emergency assistance and the school’s long-term development.
The Newman-Gray Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who demonstrates what organizers describe as the “Muir Spirit.” The scholarship is named for former principals and alumni Dr. Eddie Newman and Dr. Lawton Gray.
The fund’s launch follows the Eaton Fire, which organizers say destroyed the homes of more than 200 current Muir students and staff members and displaced an estimated 1,000 alumni. Organizers also identified two people who died in the fire—Lora Swayne, Class of 1971, and Victor Shaw, Class of 1976—as members of the Muir community.
