JS Foothill Chinese Restaurant Offers a Fresh Look at Traditional Dishes.

      By Julia McWilliams

Chinese restaurants abound in the San Gabriel Valley, but none is as close to perfection as JS Foothill.  The letter “J” represents “jade” and the letter “S” for “shan”, the Chinese word for mountain.  This writer is convinced that the jade mountain has surely made its way to our foothill community.

Located in East Pasadena, next to Ralph’s on Foothill, JS Foothill offers many delicious traditional Chinese dishes including all-day dim sum.  The restaurant is exceptionally clean and inviting.  The wait staff, primarily Julie, was extremely helpful in aiding the diner in choosing the best dishes offered.

For appetizers, we ordered spicy garlic edamame and pan-fried dumplings.  The edamame was slightly spicy/sweet, a perfect departure from plain edamame.  The pan-fried dumplings were juicy and aromatic, served over delicately shredded Chinese cabbage.  On Julie’s recommendation, we ordered the Mongolian beef, which was tasty and so tender it could have been cut with a fork.  Singapore noodles were interesting in that they were seasoned with curry, making a lovely departure from the other dishes served.  The star of the show was the orange chicken, which was cooked to perfection with a slightly crisp exterior, juicy interior.  Each dish offered a beautiful presentation, including vegetable rosettes on each plate.

When ordering for lunch, my preference is the beef chow fun, an extremely popular dish at JS, along with Chinese broccoli with garlic and baked BBQ pork buns.  A truly delightful midday experience.

Many other dishes are available in both Chinese and Szechuan styles and the dim sum menu is extensive.  This restaurant definitely deserves more than one visit to enjoy its vast offerings.  One can’t take in a mountain at one sitting; we look forward to many more gastronomical adventures here at the jade mountain.

The identity of our food critic will remain hidden as long as the person is affiliated with ColoradoBoulevard.net. We can only reveal a few details about the person. Her taste is impeccable, she has been around food — quality food — all her life, and she wishes to remain anonymous. Our food aficionado doesn’t announce her status prior to ordering, as this will taint our critic’s unbiased judgment, undermine our reputation, and spell a nightmare for servers draining their time and energy. Our reviews are based solely on the whole experience regardless of the identity of the person being served or the publication they represent. A restaurant staff mustn’t be expected to jump through hoops in exchange for a good review. It’s unethical and isn’t tolerated by our critic or us. The day our critic’s identity is accidentally or intentionally revealed will be the sad day we part ways. In the meantime, her pen name is Julia McWilliams, a nod to her favorite aunt and a famous idol chef.

Award-winning Colorado Boulevard Newspaper is your go-to source for informative news, engaging events, and vibrant community life in the greater Pasadena area. We’re proud to be recognized for excellence in journalism and remain committed to informing, educating, and collaborating to create a better world, both locally and globally.
