On August 7, 2023 at approximately 8:48 p.m., the Monterey Park Police Department went to the 300 block of North Garfield Avenue in response to information that a shooting that had just occurred.

Monterey Park Police arrived on scene and located a bullet casing in a restaurant parking lot. According to witnesses, two male Asian subjects, who appeared to know each other, were involved in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical fight.
During the fight, one man pulled out a handgun and fired it at the other. Both subjects then fled the area in separate directions. It is unknown if either of them was struck by gunfire.
The Police Department does not believe there is a threat to the general public at this time.
