In selecting John, the church’s Pastoral Search Committee felt that his unconventional career path had well prepared him to lead in such a time as this.
An electrical engineer hailing from India, John pursued a corporate career in Kuwait, then transitioned from technology to theology in Canada. He earned a Master of Theological Studies degree from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Intercultural Studies with a specialization in film and theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. He has authored multiple books in the fields of world religions, world cinema and theology.
Having resided in four countries, he has had first-hand experience with different worldviews and hopes to use his unique experiences to minister to Lake Avenue Church’s diverse family, the local community, and the world. Prior to accepting the senior pastor position, John was Pastor of Missional Outreach at the church.
“Matthew brings a unique, innovative perspective that both builds on the legacy of the church and also integrates new ideas,” Church Pastoral Search Committee Chair Dan Crichton said. “This will enable Lake Avenue to continue its rich tradition of service to the local community and beyond. We look forward to celebrating the Lord’s faithfulness to Lake Avenue Church as we mark this significant milestone in our 125-year-old history.”
