Rudolph A. “Rudy” Marcus, Caltech’s John G. Kirkwood and Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry and recipient of the 1992 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, passed away on July 16, 2026, just five days before his 103rd birthday.

Marcus transformed the scientific understanding of electron transfer, the movement of electrons between molecules during chemical reactions. His groundbreaking Marcus theory explained why electron-transfer reactions proceed at different rates, providing a framework for understanding processes ranging from corrosion and catalysis to photosynthesis and energy conversion. The work earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and continues to influence research across chemistry, biology, and materials science.
Over a career spanning nearly eight decades, Marcus authored more than 500 scientific publications and remained actively engaged in research until his final days. He was still leading a research group at Caltech and working on three scientific papers at the time of his death. His family noted that he deeply cherished his 48 years at Caltech and the colleagues, students, and friends who enriched his career.
Born in Montreal in 1923, Marcus earned his bachelor’s degree and doctorate from McGill University before discovering his passion for theoretical chemistry during a postdoctoral fellowship, a transition he later described as “like a breath of fresh air.” He joined the Caltech faculty in 1978 after appointments at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and the University of Illinois.
Beyond his scientific achievements, Marcus was widely admired as a generous mentor whose curiosity never waned. He believed that working with students kept his thinking fresh and inspired generations of scientists through both his scholarship and his open, collaborative spirit. In 2024, Caltech established the Rudolph A. Marcus Center for Theoretical Chemistry in recognition of his extraordinary contributions.
Marcus received many of science’s highest honors, including the National Medal of Science and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, and was a member of numerous prestigious scientific academies worldwide.
He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Laura Hearne Marcus, and is survived by his three sons, their families, his longtime colleague and companion, Professor Maria-Elizabeth Michel-Beyerle, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
Rudy Marcus leaves a lasting legacy as one of the foremost theoretical chemists of his generation. His pioneering discoveries, enduring curiosity, and commitment to mentoring have shaped the course of modern chemistry and will continue to inspire scientists for years to come.
