Improving Pedestrian and Traffic Safety in Altadena

In response to two separate traffic fatalities involving pedestrians that occurred last month in Altadena, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors directed the Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Works to assess traffic safety conditions on two highly-transited local roadways.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger introduced a motion during the Tuesday, January 10^th Board of Supervisors Meeting. “Keeping communities in my district safe is my top priority,” she said. “Two pedestrians tragically lost their lives recently in Altadena in isolated traffic accidents – that’s both heartbreaking and unacceptable. This motion mobilizes the County’s roadway safety experts so they can identify corrective actions and make traffic safety improvements. We need to do everything in our power to mitigate any further injury or loss of life in this close-knit community.”  The motion passed with unanimous approval.

Public Works’ traffic safety professionals have 45 days to evaluate traffic conditions on two roadway corridors: on Holliston Avenue, between Altadena Drive and New York Drive, and on Fair Oaks Avenue between Loma Alta Drive and Altadena Drive.

Barger’s motion also directs Public Works to partner with the Altadena Town Council and the community to discuss data and trends related to traffic collisions and fatalities.

“The Altadena Town Council looks forward to working with the County to find real solutions to make our roads safer,” said Veronica Jones, Chair of the Altadena Town Council. “We will work together on this necessary first step toward making our streets safer for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.”
