Charles Cook Hastings purchased 1,100 acres of land in 1882 to plant grape vines, creating Mesa Alta Rancho.

His heirs continued planting unusual specimens of plants and trees, and brought in peacocks, pheasants, cats, dogs, and champion horses.
The ranch was later divided into Upper and Lower Hastings Ranch. In the early 1950s, 800 homes were built just above Sierra Madre Boulevard. Above them, the upper portion of the ranch was built in the early 1960s, creating Upper Hastings Ranch as we know it now.
During the holidays
The neighborhood is generally quiet and peaceful until Christmas, when holiday-spirited neighbors plan fun and beautiful displays for visitors from everywhere.
Ladders abound as parkway displays are dug out from garages. Lights are strung with care and tested as the sun sets. Around every corner, there is something new and exciting to see. The Harbeck Light Show, located at 1215 Tropical Avenue, is extremely popular. As you pass the property, tune your car radio to 99.1 FM to see the lights coordinate with the music. Every year is a treat and this year promises to be even better! Plan to load up your family and experience the magic of the Ranch at Christmas.
