Los Angeles County Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis issued a statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to stay a Temporary Restraining Order that had blocked federal agents from conducting warrantless raids and engaging in discriminatory practices based on skin color, accent, language spoken, or place of work.

Solis called the ruling an “unacceptable attack” on the rights and safety of Los Angeles County residents, particularly those from Latino and immigrant communities. The Supreme Court’s decision allows for “roving immigration patrols” to operate in the county and the broader Southern California region, enabling agents to make stops based solely on someone’s occupation, appearance, or language.
“This decision is deeply troubling, and its timing is especially egregious,” Solis said. “It comes just as we begin celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor and uplift Latino communities and their profound contributions to our city, state, and nation.”
The ruling has sparked widespread concern that it will exacerbate existing fears within immigrant communities, potentially leading to heightened racial profiling and the further erosion of public trust in law enforcement. Solis emphasized that racial profiling and stops without reasonable suspicion are incompatible with the values of a free society.
“ICE raids have torn apart families and caused irreparable harm to innocent people, including U.S. citizens,” Solis continued. “This ruling will only add to the trauma faced by families in our communities, undermining their sense of safety and security.”
Solis reaffirmed Los Angeles County’s commitment to defending the rights and dignity of all residents, regardless of their immigration status. The supervisor vowed to continue fighting for the protection of local communities through legal channels and grassroots efforts, stressing that the county will not back down in its pursuit of justice for all Angelenos.
“Los Angeles County will not rest until the rights, safety, and wellbeing of all our residents are protected,” Solis concluded. “We will continue to push back against this harmful ruling, as well as any other actions that seek to divide and harm our communities.”
