Editor’s Note: We are introducing a new series based on Kitty Cahalan’s own hiking experiences. She’s named it “Hag Wild.” With a 200 percent increase in trail usage in U.S. cities due to the pandemic, we hope this new series will entertain, entice, and help you on your journey in life.
HAG WILD
The Switzer Falls Trail is a pleasant 3.4 mile down-in-up-out walk (about 500 ft elevation difference from top to bottom) that starts at the bridge over the Arroyo Seco near the Switzer Falls Picnic Area and meanders along the Gabrieleno Trail, shaded by oaks and alder, with several stream crossings.
By Kitty Cahalan
About 1.2 miles into the hike, the trail narrows as it climbs out of the trees to the side of the canyon. Through the chainlink fencing on the left at about 1.2 miles, the Arroyo Seco can be seen coursing through large granite slabs. At 1.3 miles, the Switzer Falls Trail splits off from the Gabrieleno Trail. Taking the left fork at the split leads back down to the shady streambed. From there, the trail heads north for 0.1 miles, ending at a large pool at the base of the falls, a beautiful place for a rest, refreshment and a celebratory selfie.
The trail, popular for families with kids of all ages, can be crowded. Water-loving dogs enjoy the many stream crossings and pools. Hikers will want to bring sunscreen and plenty of water, especially if they have to end their hike with the additional 0.6 miles of hot, uphill climb to reach the more distant parking areas. Trail footing is leaf debris and fine dirt in the arroyo, with rocks and logs serving as water crossings. For the canyon wall portions, footing is mostly decomposed granite. Sturdy, closed-toed shoes with grippy soles are recommended. Trekking poles are useful for stream crossings and the narrow portions of the trail. The shaded portions are quite cool, so layers may be necessary. Bathrooms are available at the picnic area and the upper parking lot along Hwy 2.
