The incident was reported at about 1:51 pm, according to the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, prompting an emergency response to an area just below the trail’s Fixed Rope section. The first rescue crew coordinated with medics from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Air 5, who had been airlifted to the location where the hiker had fallen.
Despite efforts to provide medical care, officials said the hiker did not survive. Recovery operations continued into the evening, and the victim was eventually retrieved from the mountainside.
Authorities have not released the hiker’s identity. Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Sierra Madre Police Department, Sierra Madre Fire Department, Arcadia Fire Department, Pasadena Fire Department, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The Mount Wilson Trail was temporarily closed during the operation but has since reopened, according to an advisory issued Sunday morning by the Sierra Madre Police Department. Officials urged hikers to use caution on steep sections of the trail, particularly in areas where footing may be unstable.
