On Tuesday, March 21, the San Gabriel City Council appointed John R. Harrington as the new Mayor of San Gabriel. The City Council also appointed Councilmember John Wu to serve as Vice Mayor.

John R. Harrington was elected to the San Gabriel City Council in March 2011 and is the longest-serving member of the current City Council. Harrington holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola Law School and has over twenty years of legal experience specializing in complex financial transactions, municipal law, and public works construction. He’s committed to expanding family venues and experiences through community events. He has focused efforts on developing and funding the activities that make living in San Gabriel a memorable experience.
John Wu was appointed to the San Gabriel City Council in February 2022 and elected to City Council in November 2022. Wu is passionate about improving the City’s infrastructure, resident safety, and engagement with the business community as well as budget efficiency. With years of experience in building bridges between businesses and residents, he looks to increase cohesion throughout community segments and enhance San Gabriel’s reputation as a business-friendly city.
City Council members are elected at large to serve four-year terms. The Mayor is appointed annually by the Council in a rotation among its members.

Aren’t mayors supposed to be elected?! How was this guy just appointed without the public’s input? I live in SanGabriel and I never got a notice of a mayoral vote. Please help me understand!
