Alice Handel first served her ice cream in 1945 from the family gas station in Youngstown, Ohio, and now Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is coming to 3405 E. Foothills Boulevard, Pasadena.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream now has locations in eight states. Its original location in Youngstown is something of a tourist attraction. Handel’s is expected to open in Pasadena in the next few months (in the same location where Togo’s used to be).
On its website, Handel’s boasts that it uses “products, equipment, methods and recipes exclusive only to Handel’s. Fistfuls of nuts, creamy caramel, deep dark chocolate, fresh fruits and fluffy marshmallows are blended into each batch as it is drawn from specially designed machines.” A selection of over 100 possible ice creams, sherbets, frozen yogurts and ices rotate seasonally. All are made fresh daily on site, one batch at a time.
Handel’s joins six other greater Pasadena area artisanal ice cream stores:
- Carmela, located at 2495 E. Washington, Pasadena, was founded in 2007 by Jessica and Zach using a shared kitchen space in L.A. and selling at farmers’ markets. Customer response to their ice cream led to a permanent location, along with continued sales at famers’ markets. Carmela is a micro-creamery selling handmade ice cream using seasonal, farmers’ market produces and offering classes in ice cream making.
- Founded in Iowa, Fosselman’s has a 100-year history in the ice cream business. Located at 1824 W. Main Street, Alhambra, Fosselman’s produces ice cream for high-end restaurants and prides itself on a retail business at 1824 W. Main Street, Alhambra, serving a clientele who can be heard speaking English, Mandarin and Spanish at the store counter and eating ice cream developed for their cultures, along with old time flavors.
- Afters Ice Cream has over 20 locations in California, including 1265 E. Green Street, Pasadena, and 36 W. Main Street, Alhambra. Its website states: “Afters is more than just ice cream. It’s a lifestyle.” Afters emphasizes creativity in flavors and products.
- Owner Geoff Jennings named his shop Nomad Ice Pops and set out to make handcrafted ice pops with fruit and natural ingredients. He then built a kitchen and a store at 415 S. Mission Dr., San Gabriel, and fleet of carts to get them out all over Southern California.
- Leo and Elizabeth Bulgarini of Bulgarini Gelato, on 749 E Altadena Dr, Altadena, make sure they use natural products and quality organic milk in making their handmade gelato on the premises.
- Bijan & Leila Sadeghi were born and raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, hence the name of their artisan ice cream shop, Bloomfield Creamery. With two locations, one in Pasadena, at 1727 E. Washington Blvd., and one in Westwood, they use natural local honey provided by their tiny friends and locally sourced California dairy.

You left out Wanderlust and Salt & Straw
Wish Togo’s could have stayed 😕
Why does the new construction always have to look so institutional?? That building has absolutely NO personality! I see pics of what Pasadena has morphed into, and I think everything looks like everything else. New condos look like new medical buildings, and so on and so forth…🙄😢
Paradis is amazing!
They permanently closed on Jan 4.
I know. So sad. I visit the Montrose location!
Bloomfield Creamery on Washington!
Funny, I knew exactly where it was just by the picture.
Handel’s is legit and very reasonably priced
