In a move that has fans saying, “Well of course he is,” the Pasadena Tournament of Roses just pulled off a slam dunk: Earvin “Magic” Johnson has been named Grand Marshal of the 2026 Rose Parade presented by Honda.

The announcement was made in true Hollywood fashion today on the steps of the historic Tournament House, where Tournament of Roses President Mark Leavens revealed the pick. And how did the legendary Laker make his entrance? To Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time,” naturally. Subtle? Not exactly. Magical? Absolutely.
This year’s parade theme, “The Magic in Teamwork,” might have sounded like a cute metaphor at first, but with Magic Johnson leading the way, it suddenly feels more like destiny. Some call it coincidence. We’re calling it Magic.
Johnson, whose career spans championship rings, billion-dollar boardrooms, and life-changing philanthropy, is no stranger to leading a team, on or off the court. A five-time NBA champion, three-time MVP, Olympic gold medalist, and one of basketball’s all-time greats, Magic’s legend has only grown since his playing days.
Now, as Chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, he’s transformed communities across the country through strategic investments, powerful partnerships, and tireless advocacy. From revitalizing neighborhoods to creating jobs, Johnson has shown that teamwork doesn’t stop when the buzzer sounds.
And if you thought his sports portfolio ended at basketball, think again. Magic is part-owner of just about every major league acronym you can name: MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, WNBA’s Sparks, MLS’s LAFC, NFL’s Washington Commanders, eSports’ Team Liquid, and as of September 2024, the NWSL’s Washington Spirit. He’s essentially building an all-star team of ownerships.
His community efforts are equally championship-worthy. Johnson co-founded LA Rises, an initiative supporting wildfire recovery in Southern California communities, including Altadena. He’s also made heartfelt visits to places like the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena, bringing comfort and resources to those affected by natural disasters.
Earlier this year, in January 2025, President Joe Biden awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor, a fitting tribute to a man who’s inspired both on and off the hardwood.
As Grand Marshal, Magic Johnson will ride down Colorado Boulevard on January 1, 2026, ushering in the new year with the kind of style, grace, and star power only he can deliver. He’ll also take part in the pre-game festivities at the 112th Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential, a College Football Playoff Quarterfinal matchup.
So if you’re planning to catch the 2026 Rose Parade, don’t just expect floral floats and marching bands — expect Magic.
After all, this year, the Grand Marshal doesn’t just bring the magic.
He is the Magic.

Great article! A magical start to the new year!
