Ghost Tapping: A Recent Scam Targeting Contactless Cards

A relatively new form of financial fraud known as “ghost tapping” is raising concerns among consumers and security experts, as criminals exploit contactless payment technology to steal money discreetly.

      By News Desk

Ghost tapping targets credit and debit cards equipped with tap-to-pay functionality, which uses near-field communication (NFC) to process transactions at close range. While designed for convenience, this technology has opened the door to a digital version of pickpocketing. Fraudsters reportedly use wireless devices to access card information by getting physically close to unsuspecting victims.

One common tactic involves operating in crowded spaces. Criminals may bump into individuals or create distractions, allowing their devices to briefly connect with a victim’s card and initiate unauthorized charges. Because NFC works only at very short distances, even momentary proximity can be enough to complete a transaction.

Another method relies on deception. Scammers may pose as representatives of charities or small businesses at public events such as flea markets or festivals. Victims may believe they are making a small donation or purchase, only to be charged a larger amount. In some cases, fraudsters deliberately process a small initial payment to avoid triggering fraud alerts, then follow up with larger unauthorized charges later. These interactions are often rushed, and receipts may not be provided, reducing the likelihood that victims will immediately notice discrepancies.

Financial experts advise consumers to remain vigilant. Regularly monitoring bank and credit card statements is one of the most effective ways to catch suspicious activity early. Even small, unfamiliar charges should not be ignored, as they may signal the start of a larger fraud attempt.

To reduce risk, consumers are also encouraged to use RFID-blocking wallets or card sleeves. These products are designed to help prevent unauthorized wireless access to cards, adding an extra layer of protection against skimming attempts.

As contactless payments continue to grow in popularity, awareness of emerging threats like ghost tapping is increasingly important. Staying informed and adopting simple protective measures can help consumers safeguard their finances against this evolving form of fraud.
