Free bike repair workshops are being held now through the end of the 2021/2022 school year at the La Pintoresca Teen Education Center, 1415 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena from 3:00pm – 5:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. They offer PUSD students a great way to earn community service hours and, learn how to conduct basic bike repair. Students who attend are eligible to win or earn a free bike!
“This program gives students a way to access all the wonderful programs and spaces our city has to offer. I love watching a student walk a broken bike in, and ride away smiling” shared Day One Executive Director, Christy Zamani. Students are encouraged to bring their own bikes, but they are not required to bring one. Admission into the workshop is completely free and open to all PUSD students interested in learning about bicycle repair and maintenance.
“For my kids, biking around town or to and from school fosters a sense of independence and responsibility, and knowing that they can fix a flat or adjust the brakes will increase their confidence. Being able to fix your own bike (or a friend’s!) is a great life skill,” says Christy Moision, a PUSD parent. Ezra M., an 11th grader from Blair High School states, “I like learning how to fix my own bike so I don’t have to rely on anyone else to do it. Yasser [Bike Repair Instructor] is a good teacher!”
About the Partners and Safe Routes to School
This program is made possible by Day One, PUSD, the Pasadena Dept. of Transportation, Active SGV, and the La Pintoresca Teen Education Center. Day One and partner agency Active SGV are non-profit organizations advocating for safe, inclusive, and healthy streets for all road users, regardless of mode and ability. Day One is a partner with PUSD and Pasadena DOT for the Pasadena Safe Routes to School program which seeks to get students walking and biking to school on a regular basis.
Why Free Bike Repair Workshops?
Free Bike Repair Workshops for PUSD students offer an equitable way to promote and educate about bike safety and repair to a new generation of riders and riders-to-be. The skills learned can help build the self-confidence and self-reliance of Pasadena youth and can contribute to their own independence through bicycling as a means of transportation, exercise, and fun.
