“Visualizing the Future” takes on profound meaning when imagined by young people who once weren’t sure they’d have one. That idea sits at the heart of a new exhibition from the Homeboy Art Academy, opening Saturday, May 9, 2026, at North Figueroa Bookshop in Highland Park. The public is invited to attend the opening reception from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, where students’ visions of identity, healing, and possibility will fill the gallery space.

The exhibition showcases work by Homeboy Art Academy artists ages 18–25, all of whom are formerly gang‑involved or previously incarcerated. Through photography, cyanotype, and graphic arts, these young creators confront what it means to imagine a future, one shaped not by circumstance, but by self‑expression, community, and transformation. Their pieces explore themes of emotion, culture, and belonging, offering a window into lives often unseen and stories rarely centered.
The opening night celebration will feature sips and bites, along with live music from Music Heals, a program of the Youth Music Foundation. The event underscores the Academy’s belief that the arts—whether visual or musical—can be a powerful modality for healing.
Homeboy Art Academy, part of the larger Homeboy Industries network, provides training, mentorship, and creative space for young adults rebuilding their lives. By placing art at the center of recovery and growth, the Academy helps participants develop confidence, skills, and a renewed sense of possibility.
The exhibition will be hosted inside the iconic independent bookstore North Figueroa Bookshop, a community hub known for uplifting local voices and fostering cultural dialogue. More details about the venue and its events can be found on the bookstore’s website.
