The City of San Gabriel is mourning the loss of former Councilmember Chin Ho Liao, a devoted public servant and respected community leader, who passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025, at the age of 76.

      By Rena Kurlander

Born in Taiwan, Mr. Liao was a retired engineer and longtime resident of San Gabriel. He was first elected to the San Gabriel City Council in 2013 and served for nearly a decade before stepping down in 2022 due to health concerns. During his time on the Council, he was widely admired for his commitment to transparency, inclusion, and community wellbeing.

Mr. Liao’s impact extended far beyond City Hall. For over two decades, he was actively involved in numerous local organizations, including the San Gabriel Kiwanis Club, Friends of the San Gabriel Library, San Gabriel Historical Association, San Gabriel Community Foundation, and the Asian Youth Center. He was also the founding president of the San Gabriel United Chinese Association.

A passionate advocate for civic engagement and cultural preservation, Mr. Liao dedicated his life to improving the lives of others and uplifting neighborhoods across the City of San Gabriel. His legacy of service and leadership will continue to inspire future generations.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Rose Hills Memorial Park – Memorial Chapel, located at 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, California 90601. Mr. Liao will be laid to rest at the same location in the Valley Oak Lawn section.
