Step into “Hey That’s Amore” in Old Pasadena on Holly Street and you step into a little piece of Italy.
By Julia McWilliams
It’s a sandwich, salad and coffee café drenched in Italian folklore. A small space with an abundance of personality.
Take some time to read the extensive sandwich menu board. It’s entertainment itself. All the Sandwiches are named after characters from the Godfather movies, The Soprano’s T.V. series as well as the actors and directors. I usually pick something from the “An Offer You Can’t Refuse,” menu. Some choices are “The Don Corleone,” of course, ”The Fat Clemenaz,” and “The Luca Brasi.”
I ordered the “Sonny Corleone,” a fresh Italian roll (crusty on the outside and soft in the inside) with prosciutto, lettuce, tomato, and provolone cheese. It’s delicious and light. Not too heavy for lunch.
The “Sal Tesio” became a favorite for my companion. This is a veggie sandwich with artichoke, pesto, lettuce, sun dried tomato and provolone cheese. We got the lunch special of half a sandwich and a side salad. There are five salads to choose from, all fresh and delicious. The pasta salad with a light dressing was just enough to fill me up without feeling weighed down.
However, if you are looking for a hearty sandwich, look to the “Wonders of the World” menu. These sandwiches are loaded with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and jalapeno. There is “The Former Greatest Sandwich in the World,” and “The Greatest Sandwich in the World.” You can also choose from “The Holy Trinity,” “The Heavy Hitter,” or “The Sweet Child of Swine.”
It’s a quiet little place with just a few tables inside and out. Most of the orders seem to be take-out. If you take the time to look around, you will notice photos and movie posters from The Godfather. It is a recurring theme, but a fun one, nevertheless.
Hey That’s Amore, is not big and flashy, but it holds its own in a town with an abundance of big, flashy restaurants.
