For Bianca Nava, a first-generation college student, graduation represents both a personal accomplishment and the fulfillment of a broader mission: earning a degree without the burden of student debt.
“Bianca’s graduation reflects what is possible when talent is met with sustained support,” said Jamil Momand, Chair of FGSF. “She has set a standard for what this program can achieve.”
Nava was among the first group of community college transfer students selected by FGSF to receive multi-year support during their final years at a four-year university. Her graduation serves as an early milestone for the organization’s long-term goal of helping first-generation students complete college debt-free.
“I’m proud to be the first, but I’m also proud to be part of a group,” Nava said. “We’ve supported each other along the way, and I know more graduations are coming.”
FGSF’s model combines financial assistance with mentoring, aiming to remove financial barriers that often limit opportunities for first-generation students after graduation. The organization says its goal is to allow graduates the flexibility to pursue careers, graduate school, or public service without the pressure of student loan debt.
Nava grew up in South Central Los Angeles in a family of four living in a one-bedroom apartment. During her time at Los Angeles Community College, she balanced school, work, and family responsibilities. With support from FGSF, she transferred to California State University, Los Angeles and completed her degree debt-free.
She now plans to pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
FGSF leaders say Nava’s graduation is intended to be the first of many as additional scholars in the inaugural cohort continue toward completing their degrees. The organization remains focused on expanding opportunities for first-generation college students across Southern California through multi-year scholarships designed to eliminate student debt.
