The Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS), in partnership with Mount Wilson Observatory, will host a free public star party beginning the evening of April 17 and continuing into the early hours of April 18, 2026.

The event will run from 7:00 pm to 1:00 am at the observatory, located in the San Gabriel Mountains. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe the night sky through telescopes provided by LAAS members in what organizers describe as a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

While the event is free to attend and does not require advance registration, it will serve as a fundraiser supporting outreach efforts by both organizations. Donations will be accepted at the front gate.

The star party will take place exclusively in the upper parking lot area of Mount Wilson Observatory. Public access to the rest of the observatory grounds, including the historic 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes, will not be permitted during the event.

Organizers encourage guests to bring children but ask that pets be left at home. Visitors are also advised to bring red flashlights for use in darker areas around the telescopes.

At an elevation of approximately 5,700 feet, the observatory may pose challenges for individuals with heart or respiratory conditions, and caution is advised. The event is accessible to guests with disabilities, and attendees requiring assistance are encouraged to notify parking staff upon arrival.

Driving directions and additional visitor information are available through the observatory.
