The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) presents Paintings by Shaun McCracken.
Shaun was born in Northern Ireland, and now resides in Santa Monica. He began studying art in a foundation course at St. Martin’s School of Art, before receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Goldsmith’s College, London, England in 1987. Shaun has lived and worked in London until 2008, when he relocated to Southern California. His work has been exhibited extensively in both England and the United States.
His paintings start without a previous image or idea in mind – no pre-planned structure or composition. He begins with hard-edged geometric forms and works intuitively towards completing the work.
In describing his work Shaun states, “ The process of painting is meditative, time-consuming, labor intensive, and a repetitive process… the compositions change, grow and breathe as semi-transparent colors overlap lower layers, building up a visual history of color and brush strokes. Relationships between different elements are developed until a point of cohesion is reached – where the tension of each element is held in balance”.
