Folk art is generally produced by artists who did not receive formal artistic educations. This art of ordinary folk often helps express a cultural identity by conveying community values.
A special Cultural Thursdays event presented by the Pasadena Senior Center via Zoom will celebrate this lesser known side of American art.
Often charming, sometimes comical and always heartfelt, works of folk art have been produced over a 200-year period in the U.S. and other countries. A variety of themes and mediums will be covered during the presentation by art historian Eleanor Schrader, including paintings, wood sculptures, quilts, and more.

Schrader, an award-winning architectural and interior design historian, professor and consultant, lectures worldwide on the history of architecture, interiors, furniture, and decorative arts. She has been named a distinguished instructor by UCLA Extension and is professor emeritus of art and art history at Santa Monica College. She did graduate work in fine and decorative arts at Sotheby’s Institute in London and New York, and co-authored the book “Master Architects of Southern California, 1920-1940: Wallace Neff.”
