Jouyssance, the Early Music Ensemble dedicated to presenting pre-1700 music, hosts a special two-concert event this weekend that’s bringing female voices back in spectacular choral sound.

The show MadriGALS showcases female composers of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and early Baroque eras. Jouyssance is teaming up with L.A. Camerata to highlight women’s compositions and bring back music that hasn’t been performed in centuries.

The first show on Saturday, June 13, at 8:00 pm entertains on the west side of the county in Westchester at the Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, 6700 W. 83rd St.

Especially convenient for San Gabriel Valley residents is the second concert, which begins at 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 14, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 122 S. California Ave. in Monrovia.

Tickets can be purchased online here for $25 General Admission/$20 seniors/$10 students with ID.

      Performing Artists

Jouyssance Early Music Ensemble is a Los Angeles-based vocal ensemble dedicated to revitalizing music of the Medieval, Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Under the artistic direction of Dr. Nicole Baker, Jouyssance is recognized as one of the premiere vocal ensembles in Southern California, and is the only regularly performing vocal group in Los Angeles exclusively dedicated to exploring music before 1650. Jouyssance has released three CDs, Jouyssance Early Music Ensemble, A Tour of Christmases Past, and, most recently, Cantiga: An Early Music Tour of Iberia.

L.A. Camerata tells the stories of early modern women. Inspired by renaissance era camerati—philosophical societies that debated aesthetics in the arts and society—our performances blur the boundaries between music and drama, resurrecting lost voices live on stage. L.A. Camerata has performed repeatedly at the Berkeley Early Music Fringe Festival, was selected for Early Music America’s 2020 Emerging Artists Showcase, and was a 2019 Beverly Hills National Auditions winning ensemble.
