North Figueroa Bookshop
North Figueroa Bookshop, a community-focused independent bookstore in Highland Park, will host the EFTA Opening Reception on Sunday, April 26, 2026, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. The free event is open to the public and will spotlight emerging student artists from across the region.
Expressing Feelings Through Art (EFTA) is an arts and literacy program delivered to public high school students of L.A. County as part of the non-profit Lightbringer Project. Students in 9th through 12th grade are challenged to create art pieces that tell stories that hold personal meanings for them. Topics run the gamut of subject matter and emotional tone and are often as moving as they are original. The students must also engage in an exercise of mind mapping & writing that sheds light on their visual imagery, provoking a thoughtful articulation of the stories they were artistically driven to tell and emotions they explored.
The reception will feature artwork from students representing several Southern California high schools, including Pasadena High School, Milikan High School, Van Nuys High School, Alhambra High School, South Pasadena High School, Mira Costa High School, and Claremont High School. The exhibition aims to uplift young creative voices and provide a platform for student expression.
Guests attending the event can enjoy complimentary food and beverages while exploring the artwork on display. Parking is available in a lot directly behind the shop, as well as on nearby streets. The venue is also accessible via public transit, with the Metro A Line (formerly the Gold Line) Highland Park Station located nearby.
Organizers encourage community members, families, and art enthusiasts to attend and support the next generation of artists in an inclusive and welcoming setting.
Located at 6040 N. Figueroa Street, the bookshop, known for its curated selection of new and used titles spanning all genres and age groups, serves as a collaborative venture between independent publishers Unnamed Press and Rare Bird. The store emphasizes access to literature and champions the belief that reading is a fundamental human right.
