Caltech’s Ramo Auditorium will host a free science-and-music multimedia concert on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from noon to 12:50 pm, honoring former Caltech President Thomas F. Rosenbaum and his longstanding encouragement of the campus arts scene.
The special concert will celebrate the intersection of the arts and science while inviting audiences to reflect on humanity, its place in the wider universe, and what it means to look outward with wonder and humility.
Pianist Jocelyn Chang, D.M.A., will collaborate with Michael Shaw of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which Caltech manages for NASA. The program will pair live piano music with imagery from JPL space missions, combining musical performance with images from real space exploration.
The music will travel outward from Earth, beginning with Ludovico Einaudi’s The Earth Prelude, followed by Dennis Korn’s July – Man on the Moon and Debussy’s Clair de lune. The program will then move to three movements from Holst’s The Planets, arranged for piano by David Rubinstein.
The concert will close with Fazil Say’s Black Earth.
Online registration is encouraged. A reception will follow immediately after the concert, with limited grab-and-go items available to students.
Ramo Auditorium is inside Donald E. Baxter M.D. Hall of the Humanities and Social Sciences, 1200 E California Blvd., Pasadena.
