New to biking in the city? Thinking about using your bike for errands, commuting, or everyday trips—but not sure where to start?

Join the Beginner’s Bagel Ride on Saturday, May 9th at 9:00 am. This relaxed, 6-mile urban ride is designed especially for new or returning riders who want to build confidence and learn how to use their bike as a practical replacement for a car. Along the way, we’ll make a stop for a bagel breakfast (our treat!) and cover the essential skills you’ll need to get rolling:

      • Traffic Skills for New Riders – Learn how to position yourself in traffic, navigate intersections, and feel confident sharing the road with cars.
      • Carrying What You Need – We’ll show you easy ways to carry groceries, work gear, or other everyday items on your bike.
      • How to Lock Up Right – Learn how to properly secure your bike when you leave it at a store, office, or on the street.
      • Tips for Everyday Riding – From choosing a route to what to wear, we’ll share small details that make a big difference.

This ride is beginner-friendly, no-drop (no one gets left behind), and at a slow, conversational pace. Think of it as a rolling workshop—with bagels!

Come for the bagels, stay for the skills—and leave with the confidence to start using your bike for more of your daily life.

      Event Details

Meet at Caltech Lot 10, southwest corner of Del Mar Blvd. and Michigan Ave. Return to start at approximately 12:00 pm.
      Pace: Relaxed and social
Snacks: Included—a stop for bagels and casual Q&A
Bring: A working bike, helmet, water bottle, and any questions about riding in the city
Distance: ~6 miles, with several short stops and one longer breakfast stop
RSVP Strongly Encouraged: This ride has limited space.

      Getting There

Bike: You are encouraged to bike to the start of the ride.
Public Transit: Metro Lake Station or Pasadena Transit Route 10/Metro Route 267 to Del Mar Blvd. & Chester Ave.
Parking: Caltech does not ticket on the weekends, so if you drive you can park in Lot 10
Please note you MUST sign a waiver when you arrive. Helmets are required for all riders. No training wheels permitted. Children riding on their own should remain with parents at all times, have experience riding with a group, and be able to average 12 mph. Younger children and/or pets are welcome so long as they are riding safely in a trailer, on a family cargo bike, etc.

Inclement weather cancels. Emails sent out early Saturday morning if weather will affect the ride.

What Is Needed for the Ride

A bike in good working condition. If you haven’t ridden your bike in a long time, we suggest taking it to a local bike shop for a safety check or tune up.
Helmets are recommended for all and required by law for anyone under 18.
Water and snacks for the ride.
Sunblock or clothing to protect you from the sun.
A spare tube that fits the size of your tires.

This event is part of Pasadena Bike Month made possible by the City of Pasadena Department of Transportation.
