The Altadena Historical Society will host its annual Juneteenth Celebration and Scholarship Awards on June 19, 2026, at noon at Loma Alta Park, bringing together community members for a day of remembrance, culture, and recognition.

This year’s event will feature a community luncheon, a photo exhibit by award-winning local photographer Alfred Haymond, and quilt displays created by master quilters. Organizers said the program will also explore the historical significance of Juneteenth while honoring the legacy of Ellen Garrison Clark, a prominent 19th-century civil rights activist.

A highlight of the celebration will be a preview of oral history recordings from residents impacted by the Eaton Fire. According to organizers, the recordings document the experiences of Altadena’s African-American community and will be permanently archived by the Altadena Historical Society to preserve those stories for future generations.

In tribute to Clark’s legacy, the organization will also award scholarships to graduating seniors. The scholarship tradition began in 2021 and is supported through donations from local businesses and community members.

“We are thrilled to continue this important tradition of celebrating Juneteenth and supporting our local students,” said Veronica Jones, president of the Altadena Historical Society. “This event not only commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans but also showcases the resilience and strength of the Altadena community.”

Organizers noted that the event was originally envisioned by Sandra Thomas and Veronica Jones on June 17, 2021, the day President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

The Altadena Historical Society also thanked its sponsors and community partners for their continued support of the annual celebration.
