Altadena Community to Unveil Largest-Ever Mural Honoring Mt. Lowe History
Community leaders, artists and residents will gather Sunday, May 31 at 4:00 pm for the unveiling of Altadena’s largest mural to date, a sweeping public artwork honoring the history of Mt. Lowe and the historic railroads that once transported visitors into the San Gabriel Mountains.
Titled From Rails to Trails: Echo Mountain, the mural was created by local artist Austin Scott and completed with the help of more than 80 community volunteers. Over 36 consecutive days, Scott and residents worked together to transform the wall into a large-scale tribute to Altadena’s cultural and historical legacy.
Located along the Altadena Crest Trail west of the Cobb Estate, the mural also serves as a symbol of resilience following the Eaton Fire, aiming to promote healing through art, storytelling and collective participation.
“This mural is about more than art—it’s about reclaiming our narrative and celebrating the strength of Altadena,” Scott said. “It belongs to everyone who picked up a brush, shared a story, or simply showed up in support.”
Scott gained recognition in Altadena after creating Altadena Forever, a mural commemorating businesses lost in the Eaton Fire. Since then, he has completed several murals throughout the community, including works at Eagles Hall and Altadena Cookie Co. The new mural marks both his largest personal project and the largest community mural completed in Altadena.
The project was gifted to the community by homeowners Waleed and Erin Delawari, whose rebuilt residence hosts the mural. Scott said the work will also be dedicated to Hahamog’na and the indigenous Tongva people who originally stewarded the land.
Organizers say the unveiling is intended not only as a celebration of the completed mural, but also as a broader call for continued investment in public art as a tool for community connection and recovery.
Several local organizations have joined as sponsors, including Altadena Rotary, Altadena Wild and Altadena Chamber of Commerce. The event is being hosted by 24LA in partnership with Scott.
The public event will feature remarks from the artist, community leaders and project supporters, along with music, historical displays, light bites and refreshments.
The unveiling is scheduled for May 31 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm along the Altadena Crest Trail near Canon Boulevard above Loma Alta, near 3646 Canon Blvd. in Altadena.
Organizers say the Altadena Community Mural Project is designed to celebrate local history, honor indigenous heritage and inspire future public art initiatives throughout the region.
