At their core, the Altadena Libraries are about access to ideas, information, learning opportunities, resources, and services that will help our unique community grow and thrive.

As the world of information access continues to change with the ongoing expansion of the Internet and social media, libraries have a special opportunity to take learning back to the basics. The Altadena Library District’s new “Library of Things” offers physical items that neighbors can check out, use to explore new skills, and enhance their learning.
District Director Nikki Winslow said:
A critical element of work in libraries is providing equitable access to ideas, which means adapting our resources to suit people with a variety of needs and learning styles. We are continually inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of members of our community, and we cannot wait to see what our community achieves with access to our Library of Things.
From Laptops and a telescope to sewing machines and took kits
The collection started with mobile Wi-Fi hotpots and has expanded to now include laptops, a telescope, and virtual reality kits that can be enjoyed at home. Each item can be checked out for 7 days with an opportunity for renewal if free of holds from other patrons. Soon to be added to the collection are sewing machines, paranormal investigation equipment, tool kits, and more. Library cardholders interested in placing a hold on items in the Library of Things can visit catalog.altadenalibrary.org for more information.
Civic engagement and zine kits
The Library of Things is not the first take-home resource Altadena Library District has developed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the Safer at Home orders, library staff created take-home kits* for neighbors of all ages, from story time kits packed with early literacy materials to civic engagement-themed kits for adults with free copies of John Lewis’ March: Book One, to zine kits for all ages with materials to make self-published magazines about a variety of topics.
*Those interested in picking up their own civic engagement kit or zine kit can stop by the Main Library or Bob Lucas Memorial Library during open hours or call (626) 798-0833 to schedule a curbside pickup appointment.
