Donley Field at Henry Longfellow Elementary School was an entertaining place to be on a pleasant summer day.
San Marino National played Sierra Madre (San Marino National – 13, Sierra Madre -3) in the first semi-final, and Pasadena American played Santa Anita (Pasadena American – 9, Santa Anita – 6) in the second semi-final. Final games will be played Monday and Tuesday at 5:00, and Wednesday if a tiebreaker is needed.
The East Altadena Little League was established in 1953. It currently is based at Longfellow and has been since 1997 when a dirt field was converted to 2.5 acres of grass and landscaped dirt. The field is maintained under a shared agreement between the Little League and Pasadena Unified School District.
The games harkened back to my own Little League experience in the early sixties, which for some reason I associate the old Hollywood Argyles’ hit song “Alley Oop.” Between innings, speakers behind home plate blasted AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. Times have changed, but when I watched a ground ball slip under the third baseman’s glove, I realized that the trials and tribulations of growing up in competitive sports remains unchanged.
