With remote work on the rise, it’s always a good idea to step away from your computer and get some fresh air or sign up for a leisure activity with residents of your town!

The other day, I was flipping through the City of Alhambra’s Parks and Rec Summer-Fall 2025 Leisure Guide. Expecting to find only swimming, tennis, and yoga classes, I was impressed by the variety, quantity, and affordability of activities offered. Here’s a sampling of what I found.
In addition to “butts and guts,” ball pilates, Zumba, and yoga, there are Hong Kongese Kung-Fu classes, a Japanese Kendo Dojo martial arts class, and Tai Chi classes featuring sword and fan movements, all priced around $6-8 per class.
Been meaning to learn a dance? Try beginner flamenco, folklorico of Mexico, line dancing, belly dancing, ballroom dance—or, if you prefer something less grounded, there’s acrobatics, which includes flips, jumps, and tumbling moves to incorporate into dance routines.
Free, open-play table tennis, badminton, volleyball, and basketball are offered evenings at two parks. But if you want to tap into your competitive side, you can join adult co-ed basketball and volleyball leagues. If you don’t have access to a backyard pool, you can stay cool and fit with lap or recreational swimming, available day or night. ($3 for adults, $2 for youth).
Let’s not forget the kids: they can learn tennis, piano, golf, swimming, and even participate in a mommy-daddy-and-me soccer activity for toddlers.
While the 10-week Camp Alhambra summer camps are sold out, there are still theme-specific weeklong summer camps for kids ages 5–12. They can learn cooking and dining etiquette, explore chemistry and robotics, do STEM projects with Legos, or dive into fashion design. Ah, to be a kid again!
Seniors can take an Intro to Computers class, play Mahjong, sing karaoke, join a craft circle, or head out on a day trip, with round-trip deluxe coach transportation included ($20-45), to destinations like the Getty Villa, the LA Farmers Market, or the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, to name a few.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the public library, which also offers free programs. Alhambra’s library hosts housing rights and citizenship clinics, a garden group, a produce exchange, a “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program, and more.
Personally, I’m thinking about enrolling in a 1-hour Taiko drumming class that meets for 11 Saturdays. “It’s a full-body rhythmic workout that reduces stress and is great fun!”
Take a moment to explore some local leisure activities. I guarantee you’ll find something that piques the interest of you and your family members.
