Art history might not be the most obvious subject for an animated film aimed at children and families. That is, until you recall the role Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd played in introducing millions of children to the opera The Barber of Seville, or Snoopy’s adventures as a World War I flying ace, which brought history to the old Saturday-morning television lineup.

Now it’s the turn of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, thanks to Hola, Frida! (2024), a family-friendly animated biographical film inspired by the artist’s childhood.

Sierra Madre Playhouse will screen the film on its state-of-the-art movie screen at 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

Suitable for viewers ages 7 and up, this accessible and visually compelling film follows a vibrant, free-spirited young girl in Coyoacán, Mexico, whose world is suddenly transformed by illness and physical limitations. Directed by Karine Vézina and André Kadi, the tender yet bold story traces how Frida uses imagination, art, and resilience to find her voice and express herself.

With a lively visual style rooted in Mexican cultural detail, Hola, Frida! evokes Frida’s early life—her discovery of color, nature, and self-expression—while acknowledging the adversity and transformation that shaped her. Although grounded in Frida’s true story, the film takes creative liberties to emphasize themes of difference, creativity, and hope. It also celebrates art as a source of healing and strength.

Hola, Frida! was adapted from the book Frida, c’est moi, written by Sophie Faucher and illustrated by Cara Carmina.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased online or by calling the box office at (626) 355-4318. The Sierra Madre Playhouse is located at 87 West Sierra Madre Boulevard, Sierra Madre, California 91024.
