Descanso Gardens, nestled in the hills of La Cañada Flintridge, opens its doors for free not once, but twice, this weekend.

The public is invited to celebrate the landmark’s history on Friday evening at an exhibit opening, then help shape its future by volunteering Saturday morning.
Friday: LA’s Garden Opening Reception
First up, on Friday night, visitors are invited to be among the first to view the new exhibit LA’s Garden, on display July 18 through November 29, daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Boddy House.
The opening reception runs from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Boddy House, and attendees will also be able to stroll through the gardens free of charge during the reception. No registration is required.
Curator Rosten Woo will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the exhibit, which traces Descanso Gardens’ transformation from a native oak woodland into a living museum. The exhibition highlights the Gardens’ iconic botanical collections and the diverse individuals—from Japanese American nurserymen to visionary volunteers—who helped preserve this landscape for the public.
Guests can soak in the history, enjoy the evening sights and scents of the gardens, listen to live music, and visit a no-host bar.
Saturday: Community Service Day
If you’re looking for a way to give back, or simply want to get your hands a little dirty, Saturday morning’s Community Service Day offers the chance to pitch in on a current garden project from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
Instruction will be provided, and all experience levels are welcome. The opportunity is open to anyone ages 16 and older who can lift, bend, and stand for extended periods. Moderate to heavy lifting is involved.
Participants are asked to bring their own gardening gloves and water. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended.
The event is expected to fill up, so RSVPs are required by emailing volunteer@descansogardens.org.
Additional instructions will be sent after registration, and participants must sign a waiver form before taking part.
Bring a friend and take advantage of one—or both—of these opportunities to enjoy all that the beautiful gardens have to offer.
