HMC Stratcap 1977 Saturn, LLC has withdrawn its pending application to build a data center in Monterey Park, following months of public opposition from local groups including No Data Center MPK and San Gabriel Valley Progressive Action, campaign organizers announced this week.

The developer also indicated it does not plan to oppose Measure NDC, a June 2 ballot initiative that would prohibit data centers city‑wide. If approved by voters, Monterey Park would become the first city in California to enact such a ban through a ballot measure.
Roxana Farahani, co‑founder of No Data Center MPK, said the withdrawal reflects the strength of community organizing. “We have shown that when neighbors come together, we can win against big corporations,” she said.
Advocates for the measure cautioned that the withdrawal does not guarantee long‑term restrictions on data center development. “Voters still need to show up to vote Yes on Measure NDC on June 2nd, and the City Council still needs to pass a strong ordinance ban at their April 20 and May 6 special meetings,” said Je‑Show Yang, campaign manager for Yes on Measure NDC.
Measure NDC has recently received endorsements from Congressmember Judy Chu and State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez. Several nearby jurisdictions, including Montebello, El Monte, and unincorporated Los Angeles County, are also considering limits or bans on data centers, citing concerns about energy consumption, environmental impacts, and public health.
