Colorado Boulevard Newspaper continued its award-winning run at the SoCal Journalism Awards, earning four honors in just its second year of competition.

After receiving four nominations and winning two awards in its inaugural year, the newspaper returned this year with 10 nominations and captured four awards in the categories of commentary, sports commentary, editorial cartooning and digital publishing.
Scott Phelps received second place in the News Commentary category for “Quid Pro Quo Politics in Pasadena?” Dorothy Wong earned third place in the Website category for the newspaper’s digital platform, coloradoboulevard.net. Wesley Reutimann took second place in Sports Commentary for “LA Without Open Streets? A Setback for Public Health and Community Building,” while Marc Ratner received third place in the Editorial Cartoon category for “Note to Self: Lonely Elf.”
The SoCal Journalism Awards recognize excellence across a wide range of journalism disciplines, including politics, entertainment, sports, lifestyle, environmental reporting, technology, travel, food and culture. The competition honors work produced across print, digital, broadcast, audio, video, photography, design and social media.
This year’s competition attracted a record-breaking 2,700-plus entries across dozens of categories, making Colorado Boulevard Newspaper‘s four awards an impressive achievement in an increasingly competitive field.
The Los Angeles Press Club also presented several special honors during the ceremony. NBC’s Craig Melvin received the President’s Award for his impact on the media industry. Country music artist Kenny Chesney received the Public Service Award for his contributions to civic life. ABC7 sports anchor Rob Fukuzaki was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Attorney Carol Sobel received the Guardian Award for her work advancing press freedom.
Journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa accepted the Daniel Pearl Award for Extraordinary Courage and Integrity in Journalism. During her remarks, she reflected on her investigative reporting on terrorism and her long-standing commitment to defending press freedom.
With six awards from 14 nominations in its first two years of competition, Colorado Boulevard Newspaper has established an impressive record at one of Southern California’s premier journalism contests.

Garrett was nominated for the award but did not win. He attended the event, which is why he’s pictured. Since the post was recognizing the award winners, there wasn’t an award to mention in his case. That’s standard journalistic practice.
