Are you aware that the Altadena Library (Main Branch, at 600 East Mariposa Street) offers a year-round series of art exhibits?

Selected by an art committee, the shows are always wonderful. In September and October, the Altadena Library will host “Collage,” a four-person exhibit, juxtaposing the work of four artists who use paper and glue for their creations. It is fascinating to explore how differently this technique can be interpreted. Mary Torregrossa creates joyful, luscious, lyric tableaux out of magazines clips. Stacy Russo combines watercolor and recycled paper into tender, playful narratives. Toti O’Brien incorporates textural elements and relief in her eerie dreamscapes. Olesya Volk builds paper and cardboard dioramas—miniature theaters animated by mysterious characters.
Visual and Word Artists
These four visual artists are also, in different ways, word artists, and their books are in display, ready to be borrowed. Mary is a poet and ELS teacher. Stacy is an actual librarian, author of several books of poetry and prose. Her artwork involves written narratives, often related to libraries and the love of books. Toti is an author of poetry and prose books, many of which display her cover art. Olesya has published several comic books, developing the settings, situations and characters presented by her dioramas. Many of the exhibited artworks embed text or calligraphy—though they are also filled with imagery and color.
The art is displayed in the Community Room, the Reading Room, and to the right of the Main Desk, at the Altadena Library, 600 East Mariposa Street, until October the 30, 2023. A reception with light refreshments will be held on Saturday September 16th, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, in the Community Room. The artists will be happy to meet visitors, discuss the art, and enjoy the company.
