One of the most exciting recent developments in our area is the permanent relocation of the legendary Bob Baker Marionette Theater to historic York Avenue in Highland Park. This Saturday, May 2, they celebrate their second Children’s and Family Concert with a delightful mash-up of classical music, Hollywood flair, and puppetry.

Salastina describes its “home” as an opulent, joyful place filled with beauty, splendor, and living tradition. “By day, we’re world-class performers and studio musicians who’ve played on your favorite films. By night, we’re on a mission to broaden the definition of what classical music was, is, and can be.” The organization also gives back through free bedside performances three times a week for ICU patients at UCLA Hospital and offers tuition-free composition training for young adults ages 18–30.
Classical Animals Program and Ice Cream
Salastina brings its signature joy to Saturday’s three performances (10:30 a.m., 1:30 pm, and 4:30 pm), featuring Ferdinand the Bull by Munro Leaf (arranged by Maia Jasper White) and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, performed alongside Bob Baker’s beloved puppets.
Between performances, children, and curious grown-ups, are invited to explore an instrument “petting zoo.” After the show, everyone can enjoy complimentary ice cream.
Special Guest: Rachel Bloom
The 1:30 pm performance features special guest narrator Rachel Bloom, known for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She guides the audience through each story with her signature wit, warmth, and theatrical sparkle.
Note: Children ages 2 and under who will be sitting on a lap are free and do not require a ticket. All guests must be at least 16 years old or be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
