On Tuesday, March 16, 2021, San Gabriel City Council appointed Chin Ho Liao as Mayor of San Gabriel.

During the San Gabriel City Council reorganization, Vice Mayor Chin Ho Liao was nominated for Mayor by then Mayor Denise Menchaca. With no other nominations, the Vice Mayor was immediately sworn in as Mayor.
His first order of business was to open the floor for Vice Mayor nominations. Councilmember Jason Pu nominated Councilmember Tony Ding, who in turn nominated Councilmember John Harrington. After a brief discussion, Councilmember Harrington withdrew his name from the nominations, and Councilmember Ding was elected as Vice Mayor. He was immediately sworn in.
Of the appointment, Mayor Liao said:
After one year of the COVID-19 pandemic, we all have to work together with compassion so that we can bring love and peace to everyone in the San Gabriel community.
Of his appointment, Vice Mayor Ding said, “I am honored to be appointed Vice Mayor by the City Council. As Vice Mayor, I will continue to work hard to make San Gabriel a better place to live by working closely with my colleagues and everyone in our community.”

At the start of the meeting, outgoing mayor Denise Menchaca presented a virtual 2020 State of the City address via video (see video below) with information on how the City is addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic:
