Camerata Pacifica will conclude its 36th season with a May 19 performance in San Marino featuring the California premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 15, Op. 144 in a chamber arrangement by Viktor Derevyanko.
By Melanie Hooks
The performance at Rothenberg Hall is the final stop of a four-city Southern California tour that also includes Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Thousand Oaks.
Derevyanko’s arrangement, scored for piano trio and percussion, was personally approved by Shostakovich following the symphony’s 1972 premiere in Moscow. The 47-minute work reimagines the composer’s final symphony in a chamber setting and has been performed infrequently in the Western Hemisphere.
The program will feature violinist Grace Park, cellist Ani Aznavoorian, pianist Gilles Vonsattel, and percussionists Ji Hye Jung, Ayano Kataoka, Svet Stoyanov, and Jason Treuting.
In addition to the Shostakovich work, Vonsattel will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in A Major, Op. 2, No. 2 as part of Camerata Pacifica’s ongoing “Beethoven 32” project, a multi-year exploration of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas.
The concert will also include Thierry De Mey’s Musique de Table and Kenji Bunch’s Transcontinental for violin and percussion.
The tour includes performances at Zipper Hall, the Music Academy of the West, the Janet and Ray Scherr Forum, and Rothenberg Hall at The Huntington in San Marino.
Tickets for the San Marino performance range from $35 to $75. Information available on Camerata Pacifica’s official website.
